Malibu Library Grand Opening and Earth Day Festival

Malibu, California – With environmental stewardship as a top priority, the City of Malibu will celebrate Earth Day (Sunday, April 22, 2012) with two exciting events: the highly anticipated grand opening of the Malibu Library and an action-packed Earth Day Festival.

Admission to both events is free and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The Malibu Library Grand Opening Celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 23519 West Civic Center Way. A dedication ceremony featuring elected officials as well as special guests Pierce Brosnan and Dick Van Dyke will commence promptly at 11 a.m.

After undergoing a $6 million renovation, the new sustainable LEED-certified library represents Malibu’s leading role in environmental preservation and tells the story of the City’s sand, sea and sun culture.  The grand opening ceremony will feature live music and entertainment, local authors, children’s activities, story time and interactive exhibits. One such exhibit generously donated by Steve Soboroff will showcase several typewriters previously owned by historical luminaries including John Lennon, Ernest Hemmingway, Joe DiMaggio, George Bernard Shaw and Andy Rooney, among others. Guests will have the opportunity to use the typewriters by making donations that will benefit Malibu High School and the Emily Shane Foundation, a local nonprofit.

The City’s Earth Day Festival will take place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Legacy Park (located directly across the street from the Malibu Library). The festival will include several educational booths; a shoe drive; native plant sale; smart
gardening workshop; park tours; live animals; composting demonstrations, a hike to Malibu Lagoon; a historic photo exhibit and food vendors, among many other activities.
