'The Doctor and the Rabbi' to Share Insights on the Relationship Between Spirituality and Health

A three-part class will be offered at the Chabad Jewish Community Center of Pacific Palisades starting Wednesday.

Internist  and Rabbi Shloime Zacks of have been meeting for years to engage in discourse “regarding emotional and spiritual topics relevant to today's society.”

Zacks and Bornstein were struck by the way human health is affected by both medicine and awe.

“There are many points of convergence between healing and scripture, especially the finer details of deeper spiritual interpretation that we find in Judaism,” said Bornstein, who has been in practice in Pacific Palisades since 2005.

“Parts of Jewish spirituality are universal. Health care is universal, we all have bodies,” Zacks noted, “so anybody can appreciate that stuff.”

The men agreed they were in possession of valuable information that would be of benefit to many and they wanted to share it.

For three consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 20, Zacks and Bornstein will be team-teaching “The Doctor and The Rabbi” at the Chabad Center.

“Rabbi Shloime and I are passionate about teaching others how to help themselves attain optimal wellness, and we hope to motivate and inspire others to recognize their inherent potential to heal,” Bornstein said.

The doctor emphasized that the lessons will be “scientific and knowledge-based.”

"Since we are body, mind and spirit, any practitioner of the healing arts must become knowledgeable regarding the connection of all three of these facets in regard to healing and wellness."

The rabbi promises that the teachings will not only have an immediate practical application but will also provide the opportunity to view life and health from a new perspective.

Lesson one, called "Vitamin D-vine," covers light, which encompasses both the nurturing light of the sun and light as a metaphor for revelation and joy.

The second class, "The Whole Shmear on Fear," looks at the effect of negativity on our bodies and our lives.

The last lesson, "Always, Never and Forever," looks at unconditional love and what it means to our relationships and our health. The teachers will talk about the consequences of holding grudges and “whether it is ever OK to hate someone,” Zacks mentioned pointedly.

Classes will meet from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Chabad Center at 15207-A Sunset Blvd. The cost per class is $15, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. As with most Chabad programs, refreshments will be served. Call 310-454-7783 for more information or click here to register online.
