Marquez Charter Wins Apple Distinguished School Award

The Pacific Palisades campus celebrates the honor, given for its use of technology in students' learning process, at a ceremony Friday.

Children and adults alike were beaming Friday at Marquez Charter School as the campus received an Apple Distinguished School Award.

The Apple Distinguished School Award is given to only 54 schools in the U.S. It was given in recognition of Marquez's implementation of technology in the learning process.

“Our digital edge program supplements tried teaching methods with cutting edge technology,” said Mary Wlodek, co-president of the Friends of Marquez. “They still learn to read books, write longhand and perform math calculations but they have computer programs and literacy programs to help the learning process. For example, with one project they research and write a report longhand and then create an iMovie to go with it.”

Marquez Principal Philip Hollis began the ceremony by congratulating parents, children and teachers on their achievements.

Representatives from Apple then presented Hollis and the campus with the award, which was followed by some brief remarks by school board member Steve Zimmer.

Hollis also congratulated kindergarten teacher Lisa Timmerman for the education award she received from PBS in recognition of her use of media in the classroom, and he praised teacher Mitchell Jacobs’ second-graders on their math performance.
