CD 11 Councilmember Mike Bonin will join volunteers from the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition and LA Walks at the 2013 “L.A. Bike and Ped Count” on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. in West L.A.
Bonin, who chairs the City Council’s Transportation Committee and serves on both the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Expo Construction Authority Board of Directors, will meet with 2013 Bike and Ped volunteers at one of 120 count sites, where data noting the number of pedestrians and bicyclists passing by key intersections will be gathered.
Bonin will join volunteers at the corner of Bundy Drive and Idaho Avenue from 7:30 – 8 a.m. in West L.A.
“For too long, our city’s focus has been on cars, and not on communities – despite the evidence that walking and cycling promote healthy lifestyles and reduce pollution and traffic congestion,” said Bonin in an official release. “Part of our problem is data. We have, from various sources, an abundance of data on auto trips; yet very little is known about the rates of people walking or bicycling in Los Angeles. These volunteers are helping to change that and I am very grateful for their work.”
The Bike and Ped Count is held every two years. In 2009, the Bike and Ped Count counted 14,000 bicyclists and 62,000 pedestrians. In 2011, volunteers counted more than 15,000 bicyclists and 75,000 pedestrians. For more information about the 2013 L.A. Bike and Ped count, please visit http://www.la-bike.org/2013LAbikepedcount.
