Where Does God Live?

This month as Thanksgiving approaches our school focuses on home and family in our lesson plans to our preschoolers. All month the children get to share information about their families. By bringing in a family photo, making pictures or collages of their families, and talking about what is special about their family members. One of the things about our preschool that separates us from other schools is that our first carpet time for our youngest class is devoted to lessons about God. One of my favorite lesson plans is about where God lives.

“Where Does God Live” by Holly Bea is a great story to read to preschoolers. It speaks to a preschooler’s natural curiosity and helps to bring an understanding of God to their own lives. Towards the end of the book the little girl receives her answer from her grandmother.  The truth is God lives in everything and everyone. After the story I always like to ask the children to tell me where they think God lives, partially to assess their comprehension but mostly because their answers are always extremely precious. Over the years I have heard many answers. Below are some of the most memorable:

“Behind the light switch”

In Bible Psalm 39 5:9 Speaks of God’s light:

5 Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the skies.
6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
    your justice like the great deep.
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;
    you give them drink from your river of delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light we see light.

This week may God’s light shine on you, in you, and through you.
