Officials caution visitors to stay out of the water Friday morning after a tsunami advisory is issued for the California coast.

Los Angeles County lifeguards warned Will Rogers State Beach patrons to stay out of the water Friday because of a tsunami advisory issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Officials predict that 3-foot swells could hit the Palisades beach.

"It may be a minor surge, but we don't know when it will come in and it could be several hundreds of miles per hour," said Lucie Kim, marketing analyst for the L.A. County Department of Beaches & Harbors.

The tsunami threat level could be reduced soon, but it could also be extended because of recent aftershocks in Japan. It's too soon to tell, Kim told Palisades Patch.
