'Wheel of Life' Art Show Features Palisades Artist

Palisadian artist Karen Bellone holds the first exhibit of an eight-part series in Santa Monica.

Palisadian Karen Bellone, along with her New York artistic partner, Lisa Rinzler, held an exhibit at Studio 1520 in Santa Monica last weekend.

The still and moving art entitled Wheel of Life, is the first section of an eight-part series entitled America Time Moving & Storage. The materials used in the exhibit consisted of items and photographs that Bellone and Rinzler collected over the course of 20 years.

At the exhibit, Bellone explained how the project was inspired by timely events, such as the Gulf War, 9/11 ... along with what is happening today.

"We were horrified by what we saw after the first Gulf War ... a major shift was occurring during the last ten years of the 20th century and the first ten years of the 21st. A sense of disenfranchisement was growing," said Bellone. "The wheel is symbolic of the circle of life swirling around us, and the constant motion of time moving."

Along with still photographs on the walls, the exhibit featured a moving picture placed in a specially made, circulating projector to represent the "Wheel of Life." The screening lasted eight minutes, showcasing images across the walls, ceiling and floor.

Bellone said the audio was specifically chosen to reflect the era in which the photos were taken, the change that has occurred since the Gulf War and, as a result, the passing of the "American Dream."

"The American Dream is over because it has passed us by and we are living on the fumes of that illusion. We need to redefine what the American Dream means to us individually," said Bellone.

Rinzler said now that the era of the American Dream is over, people have to find their identity.

"Art is an amazing tool to think, contemplate, ask questions and grow.  We hope to build peace and that is why we want everyone to watch this together as a community," said Rinzler.

Bellone and Rinzler hope to raise funds to complete the other seven sections of America Time Moving & Storage. All of the proceeds from the Sept. 25 event went to fund the project.
