The state assembly district candidate shares her views on issues with the Pali Community Council.
Torie Osborn, a California Assembly District 50 candidate, attended the Pacific Palisades Community Council meeting Thursday where she discussed issues affecting the community. Osborn, a Santa Monica resident for 27 years, has worked as a community organizer and a policy adviser to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villariagosa. "It was a painful experience to see the results of 30 years of steady cuts of government and what it was like to be inside the starved beast of government after 30 years of steady erosion," Osborn commented on working in the mayor's office. "I became convinced that we need both serious governance reform and serious tax reform." Questions for Osborn from the community council were on issues that included the state budget, …

Current Assemblywoman Betsy Butler has the most cash on hand, followed closely by Torie Osborn in the election for the 50th Assembly District.
With sizable donations from unions and colleagues at the state Capital, first-term state legislator Betsy Butler is boasting the biggest campaign war chest in the race for the 50th Assembly District. Butler reported having $463,687 on hand in the most recent filings with the Secretary of Sate ahead of the June 5 primary. While firefighter and labor unions, lawmakers and political action committees cut Butler big checks, she wasn’t the only candidate to rake in more than a quarter of a million dollars from January to mid-March. And, she wasn’t spending the most, either. Torie Osborn—the grassroots organizer who snagged endorsements this winter from most of the area’s local Democratic clubs—reported $429,450 and outspent Butler by $28,679 …

No surprises as the Secretary of Sate releases the certified list for the 2012 election: Republican Brad Torgan and Democrats Betsy Butler, Richard Bloom and Torie Osborn.
With the exception of lone Republican Brad Torgan, who just announced his candidacy in February, the hot race for California's 50th Assembly will look just as it has for many months—Democrats Betsy Butler, Richard Bloom and Torie Osborn will go head-to-head to clinch the seat in 2013. The deadline is passed for any other contestant to join the field as the California Secretary of State released the certified candidates list for the June 5 primary Thursday evening. The candidates and their official ballot designations are: Butler has already won the endorsement of the California Democratic Party while Osborn has the backing of a handful of local democratic clubs, including those in Malibu, Santa Monica, Westwood-Beverly Hills and San …

Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin and former 53rd Assembly nominee Nathan Mintz are backing the Republican candidate for the 50th Assembly District seat.
Brad Torgan, the lone Republican in the race for California's new 50th Assembly District, announced Monday that he is being endorsed by Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin and former 53rd Assembly nominee Nathan Mintz. Both are constituents of Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, who is also in the running for the 50th Assembly District seat. After the California Citizens Redistricting Commission redrew the Assembly lines, Butler moved out of the South Bay district where she was elected two years ago to run in the 50th District, which includes Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu and Agoura Hills. Also running in the AD50 race are political veteran Torie Osborn and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom. Butler, Osborn and Bloom are …

Opponents say most of Betsy Butler's votes came from delegates indirectly appointed by California Assembly Speaker John Perez.
State Assembly candidate Betsy Butler picked up the endorsement of the California Democratic Party this past weekend at the organization's convention in San Diego. But as has been the case for many of the endorsements in the 50th Assembly District contest, this one came with controversy. Butler, a current Assembly member who represents a South Bay district, received 62 of the possible 85 delegate votes. Rival Torie Osborn, a political activist, had 20 backers and Santa Monica Mayor/California Coastal Commissioner Richard Bloom earned no support. Three delegates voted for no endorsement. "These numbers represent the heart and commitment of Los Angeles Democrats," said Butler, according to a press release issued by her campaign. "People in…

Longtime West Hollywood-Beverly Hills Democratic Club members say sudden influx of new, pro-Osborn members stacked the vote in her favor. Candidate defends tactic.
It was a tense Wednesday night in West Hollywood as California Assembly candidate Torie Osborn received another local Democratic club's key endorsement, one mired in controversy. The community organizer won the support of the West Hollywood-Beverly Hills Democratic Club—her eighth endorsement from eight area Democratic clubs in recent weeks, again edging out her opponents in the upcoming primary, incumbent Betsy Butler and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom. But Weho-Beverly Hills club members say their endorsement process was hijacked by way of a slew of new members who allegedly joined the club for the sole purpose of securing the Osborn endorsement. Similar charges were made at the Malibu Democratic Club’s endorsement of Osborn earlier …

Community organizer Torie Osborn wins 77 percent of the votes of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, again edging out her opponents in the upcoming 50th Assembly District primary.
Torie Osborn's campaign for the California Assembly continued gaining steam Tuesday night as she picked up her third endorsement from a local Democratic club in recent weeks. Having already garnered support from the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Malibu Democratic Club, she now has the backing of the Santa Monica Democratic Club. The Pacific Palisades Democratic Club did not endorse any of the three candidates following a forum on Jan. 15. Osborn won the endorsement overwhelmingly after the three candidates for the newly-carved 50th Assembly District fielded questions about an array of issues plaguing the financially troubled state. "Because of you I’m going to win," she told her supporters, whom she called "…

None of the three Democratic candidates received at least 60 percent support from the executive board, a requirement to get the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club's backing.
No candidate for representative of the state Assembly's 50th District, which includes the Palisades, will be able to boast of an endorsement from the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club. The club's executive board failed to reach a decision on whom to back on Sunday following a candidates forum featuring the three Democrats—Richard Bloom, Betsy Butler and Torie Osborn. A candidate needed at least 60 percent support from the 21 board members who voted. No candidate reached that threshold, board members said. Adam Wolman, the club's vice president in charge of communications, said the club would not release the voting results. The vote followed a candidates forum at the Pacific Palisades Woman's Club that was attended by about 140 people. The …
