Torie Osborn Campaigns at PPCC Meeting

The state assembly district candidate shares her views on issues with the Pali Community Council.

Torie Osborn, a California Assembly District 50 candidate, attended the Pacific Palisades Community Council meeting Thursday where she discussed issues affecting the community. Osborn, a Santa Monica resident for 27 years, has worked as a community organizer and a policy adviser to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villariagosa. "It was a painful experience to see the results of 30 years of steady cuts of government and what it was like to be inside the starved beast of government after 30 years of steady erosion," Osborn commented on working in the mayor's office. "I became convinced that we need both serious governance reform and serious tax reform." Questions for Osborn from the community council were on issues that included the state budget, …

Betsy Butler Makes Campaign Stop at PPCC Meeting

The Assembly District 50 candidate answers questions and discusses the upcoming election.

California Assemblywoman Betsy Butler made a campaign stop Thursday at the Pacific Palisades Community Council meeting, where she answered questions from PPCC members on issues affecting the state and Los Angeles area. "How can we make people's lives better, that's what government's for," Butler said during her opening remarks. "I believe in government. The government's not perfect, but it's here to make sure we have healthy, sustainable lives." Butler said her top priority is restoring education funding because "it's an investment in our future." Schools have endured major budget cuts during California's economic downturn as a result of dwindling tax revenue. "There's been an economic crisis across the country but obviously it's also …

Prop 13 is NOT a complicated measure, it works. The students worst enemy is the retired state teacher. They (the students)NEED to know their enemy and complain to THEM about the insane cost of a education. The retired teacher collects their insane guaranteed retirements and they know exactly who they are hurting, the students! They are draining the school funding super fast. As long as the waste …   more ›

Butler Constituents Back Brad Torgan for AD50

Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin and former 53rd Assembly nominee Nathan Mintz are backing the Republican candidate for the 50th Assembly District seat.

Brad Torgan, the lone Republican in the race for California's new 50th Assembly District, announced Monday that he is being endorsed by Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin and former 53rd Assembly nominee Nathan Mintz. Both are constituents of Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, who is also in the running for the 50th Assembly District seat.  After the California Citizens Redistricting Commission redrew the Assembly lines, Butler moved out of the South Bay district where she was elected two years ago to run in the 50th District, which includes Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Malibu and Agoura Hills. Also running in the AD50 race are political veteran Torie Osborn and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom. Butler, Osborn and Bloom are …

Better Infrastructure May Lead to Less Westside Traffic, Says Bloom

Santa Monica's mayor also speaks with the Pacific Palisades Community Council about issues including energy efficiency and creating a deeper connection between the two communities.

Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom delivered remarks and fielded questions Thursday at the Pacific Palisades Community Council meeting. Bloom, who seeks the 50th District seat in the California Assembly this year, dialogued with community council members on a number of issues affecting Palisadians. He advocated mixed-use developments that incorporate business space and residential housing as well as improvements to the bike and pedestrian infrastructure as key to reducing Westside traffic. The mayor touted his city's success at making it a place where motor vehicles are not as much of a transportation necessity compared with other parts of Los Angeles County. "Our hotels are now enjoying the highest occupancy rate in the county, and it's …

Clearly candidate Bloom has been closing his eyes or looking the other way during his tenure as council member in Santa Monica. The traffic situation has gotten progressively worse every year for the past 10 years with the Santa Monica City Council voting for more development the whole time. The bottleneck south of Montana (i.e., the area the council prefers to toss everything) has even more …   more ›

State Dems Back Butler for 50th Assembly Seat

Opponents say most of Betsy Butler's votes came from delegates indirectly appointed by California Assembly Speaker John Perez.

State Assembly candidate Betsy Butler picked up the endorsement of the California Democratic Party this past weekend at the organization's convention in San Diego. But as has been the case for many of the endorsements in the 50th Assembly District contest, this one came with controversy. Butler, a current Assembly member who represents a South Bay district, received 62 of the possible 85 delegate votes. Rival Torie Osborn, a political activist, had 20 backers and Santa Monica Mayor/California Coastal Commissioner Richard Bloom earned no support. Three delegates voted for no endorsement. "These numbers represent the heart and commitment of Los Angeles Democrats," said Butler, according to a press release issued by her campaign. "People in…

Assembly Candidate Osborn's Latest Endorsement Comes Amid Controversy

Longtime West Hollywood-Beverly Hills Democratic Club members say sudden influx of new, pro-Osborn members stacked the vote in her favor. Candidate defends tactic.

It was a tense Wednesday night in West Hollywood as California Assembly candidate Torie Osborn received another local Democratic club's key endorsement, one mired in controversy. The community organizer won the support of the West Hollywood-Beverly Hills Democratic Club—her eighth endorsement from eight area Democratic clubs in recent weeks, again edging out her opponents in the upcoming primary, incumbent Betsy Butler and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom. But Weho-Beverly Hills club members say their endorsement process was hijacked by way of a slew of new members who allegedly joined the club for the sole purpose of securing the Osborn endorsement. Similar charges were made at the Malibu Democratic Club’s endorsement of Osborn earlier …

Osborn Snags 3rd Dem Club Endorsement

Community organizer Torie Osborn wins 77 percent of the votes of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, again edging out her opponents in the upcoming 50th Assembly District primary.

Torie Osborn's campaign for the California Assembly continued gaining steam Tuesday night as she picked up her third endorsement from a local Democratic club in recent weeks. Having already garnered support from the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Malibu Democratic Club, she now has the backing of the Santa Monica Democratic Club. The Pacific Palisades Democratic Club did not endorse any of the three candidates following a forum on Jan. 15. Osborn won the endorsement overwhelmingly after the three candidates for the newly-carved 50th Assembly District fielded questions about an array of issues plaguing the financially troubled state. "Because of you I’m going to win," she told her supporters, whom she called "…

Palisades Dems Make No Endorsement in 50th Assembly Race

None of the three Democratic candidates received at least 60 percent support from the executive board, a requirement to get the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club's backing.

No candidate for representative of the state Assembly's 50th District, which includes the Palisades, will be able to boast of an endorsement from the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club. The club's executive board failed to reach a decision on whom to back on Sunday following a candidates forum featuring the three Democrats—Richard Bloom, Betsy Butler and Torie Osborn. A candidate needed at least 60 percent support from the 21 board members who voted. No candidate reached that threshold, board members said. Adam Wolman, the club's vice president in charge of communications, said the club would not release the voting results. The vote followed a candidates forum at the Pacific Palisades Woman's Club that was attended by about 140 people. The …

A coalition of 27 Democratic clubs in the San Fernando Valley has endorsed Torie Osborn for the newly created 50th Assembly District, which will include Pacific Palisades in the November election.

The Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley announced that it is backing political veteran Torie Osborn in the race for the new 50th Assembly District, which includes Pacific Palisades. "On behalf of the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley, we are pleased to endorse Torie Osborn for the new 50th Assembly District seat," DP/SFV Chair Agi Kessler said in a statement posted Tuesday on Osborn's campaign website. "She won with a clear and strong majority of support from our members, and we plan to do everything we can to get her elected to the Assembly. The DP/SFV is the coordinating body for a coalition that includes 27 Democratic clubs that are wholly or partially in the San Fernando Valley. Osborn is one of three Democratic …

Osborn Supporters Accuse Butler of Hypocrisy

They say state Assembly candidate Betsy Butler's campaign did what she criticized Torie Osbon's campaign for doing to obtain the Malibu Democratic Club's endorsement. Butler says the two situations are different.

State Assembly candidate Betsy Butler and her supporters criticized Torie Osborn's campaign for recruiting people to join the Malibu Democratic Club  so they could vote for her in Sunday's endorsement election. Osborn supporters say they are hypocrites because Butler's campaign has encouraged people to "join as many of the Dem clubs as possible" through a mass email. Butler told Patch that the two situations are different because nobody has offered to pay for her supporters to join the organizations. One person submitted a $1,000 check last month to the Malibu club to cover the expenses of about 40 Osborn supporters' memberships, club President Jean Goodman told Patch. Osborn won the endorsement for the Assembly's 50th District seat  on …
