Officials Warn of New Utility Scam

Multi-state scam is targeting LADWP and SoCal Gas customers, claiming the president will pay their bills.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Southern California Gas Company are warning customers about a scam that collects Social Security numbers from victims by convincing them that the president will pay their utility bills. Suspects go door to door, send texts and even use social media, telling their marks that President Barack Obama is offering a special program of bill credits or direct payment of bills. The victims must provide their Social Security number, and are given a bank routing number to pay the bills with. However, the number is fraudulent and bills are not paid. Officials at both the LADWP and SoCal Gas say that all employees wear identification badges, and do not collect payments door to door, nor do they call…

Fire Station 69 Hosts Open House Saturday

The station will feature tours and demonstrations for Fire Service Recognition Day.

Fire Station 69 in Pacific Palisades will be one of eight Los Angeles city fire stations that will participate in open houses this Saturday. The event, which will feature demonstrations and tours at various fire stations, is part of Fire Service Recognition Day. Fire Station 69 will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in an effort to "increase awareness of fire department services," according to the LAFD website. The department also says it's a way to extend appreciation to the community. Fire Service Recognition Day is celebrated by the LAFD on the second Saturday in May. This year's theme is "Serving Our Communities: Prepare, Respond, Recover." City News Service contributed to this report.

President in Studio City, Beverly Hills Thursday

Traffic delays and protests are expected during President Barack Obama's short visit to Southern California.

Ahead of President Barack Obama's planned trip to Los Angeles Thursday night, L.A. Councilman Paul Krekorian warned Studio City residents and commuters who travel through that area to expect traffic delays. Obama is attending an evening fundraiser at actor George Clooney's home in the Fryman Canyon neighborhood. The president is scheduled to land at LAX at 6:25 p.m., and is expected to travel by helicopter and motorcade to Clooney's home. His exact route is not being released. Road closures and tight security in the hills could lead to traffic delays on Ventura Boulevard and Laurel Canyon Boulevard north of Ventura Boulevard, Krekorian said. Authorities Seize, Return Stolen Bikes

Authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts of area mountain bikes with an estimated total value of $250,000.

Authorities on Wednesday sought victims of a ring of thieves who stole nearly 200 expensive mountain bicycles with an estimated total value of $250,000. Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts: Julian Herrera, 23, and his brother Jamie Herrera, 21, both of Los Angeles; and Alberto Mejia, 34, of Colton. A news conference was planned this morning, when officials will display 20 recovered bicycles and 40 recovered wheels and ask victims to come forward and retrieve their property. The thieves allegedly used social media, including Craigslist, to target victims in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, Nishida said. Detectives …

Vehicle Slams Into Pole Near Topanga

One person was taken to UCLA Medical Center for treatment.

A vehicle slammed into a power pole Tuesday on Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash was reported at 7:42 p.m. Tuesday on westbound PCH at Topanga Canyon Boulevard, the CHP reported. The left lane was briefly blocked, but it was quickly cleared, said. Lt. Jim Royal of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lost Hills/Malibu Station. The right lane remained closed for hours following the incident. According to a spokeswoman for Southern California Edison, crews were on the scene to handle the damaged pole. However, there was no disruption of service. Truck Overturns, Spills Fuel on Topanga Canyon Boulevard

The cement truck overturned on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, prompting a closure between Pacific Coast Highway and Old Topanga Canyon Road.

A cement truck overturned on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, spilling 40 gallons of diesel fuel and prompting a road closure on Friday. The crash was reported at 11:30 a.m. on Topanga Canyon Boulevard at mile marker two, according to the California Highway Patrol. The road was expected to be closed from Pacific Coast Highway to Old Topanga Canyon Road until as late as 6 p.m. Friday, according to the City of Malibu's Office of Emergency Services. The CHP reported that about 30 feet of guard rail was damaged and 40 gallons of diesel fuel spilled.

Just from personal observation, the accidents seem to occur most often where this accident occurred at the three sequential S-curve switchbacks that are all on inclines with blind curves with tiny pull-outs only big enough for up to an SUV. Those larger trucks should not be using Topanga, especially in light of the large numbers of hikers and bikers who frequent it. I keep the speed limit and am …   more ›

Man Arrested For May Day Snare Drum Assault

A man is taken into custody for allegedly striking a police officer with a snare drum during a May Day protest.

A man was in custody Thursday for allegedly hitting a Los Angeles police officer on the head with a snare drum during the May Day protests. Brian Mendoza, 23, was arrested on Wednesday and booked on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, said Los Angeles police spokesman Richard French. He was booked for a felony and was being held without bail, according to the Sheriff's Department. Mendoza allegedly struck the officer on the head from behind on Tuesday afternoon, and the blow put a dent in her helmet. The attack was caught on videotape showing a protester with a drum hanging from his neck.
