LG Taylor holds a reading of her screenplay "Code 99" in West Los Angeles, raising questions about medical care.
Pali Patch blogger LG Taylor has written many posts about the health industry. In a post titled Code 99 Courts Hollywood, Taylor wrote how she and a physician, Dr. Jason Kane, collaborated to write a script about patient safety and "a fearful emerging trend of 'criminalizing a doctor’s errors.'" Last week, many talented actors brought these issues to life during a reading of Taylor's screenplay, Code 99, at the upstairs theatre at St. Nick's Pub in West Los Angeles. In the script, doctors of a fictional Chicago hospital face ethical dilemmas while treating their patients. Among the plot lines, a doctor fails to tell a nurse the correct dosage of medication for an infant, but, since the baby stabilizes, the doctor struggles with whether or …

To submit a piece to Patch, email it to the site editor. My husband and I moved from two miles east of the 405 Freeway to two miles west of the 405 Freeway nearly four years ago. In the past three years, the traffic situation in our new neighborhood has only steadily gotten worse, and to the point where we are thinking of leaving Los Angeles. I was born here. My husband has lived here for over 40 years. I cannot imagine leaving, but I cannot imagine staying here if something does not change for the better. To travel east from our home in Brentwood after 2:30 p.m. is beyond painful and…

April 19 marks Holocaust Remembrance Day. As we remember those who perished, the president of Jewish World Watch notes that despite the adage “Never Again,” there have been 46 genocides since the Holocaust.
A few years ago, my father-in-law, David, stood on a corner in the small Ukrainian village of Tuchin and pointed to the spot where he last saw his mother, Chaya, his sister, Rachel, and her three small children in November 1941. The Nazis had invaded the Ukraine in June and by November it was clear that they were advancing on Tuchin. Chaya sent David off by foot to outrun the Nazis; as bad luck would have it, her daughters' children were suffering from the measles and had high fevers. The plan was for Chaya, Rachel and the children to join David on the eastward trek a few days later. Chaya waved goodbye to David, knowing that they would only be separated for a few days. Within hours of David's departure, the Nazis invaded. David's family…

In sum, Passover is a great weeklong Jewish festival of freedom that points to our universal longing for a better, freer, and more just world.
This year the Jewish festival of Passover begins at sunset April 6 and lasts until Sunday night, April 15. The holiday is meant to be seven days, but there is a long-standing tradition for Jewish holidays celebrated outside of Israel to add a day. This is because, in ancient times, the Jewish year was not set according to a calculated calendar but rather simply by observing the status of the new moon in the sky, and there was some doubt as to when the holidays were. So, Passover outside of Israel is eight days long. The roots of the holiday are found in the biblical Book of Exodus, and tells the story of where God sends Moses to liberate the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Telling and retelling the story is in fact central to …

No one drew all six numbers in Tuesday's Mega Millions lottery, meaning Friday's will be the largest in the history of the game.
If you bought a Mega Millions lottery ticket for Tuesday's drawing, the bad news is no one hit all six numbers. But the good news is the jackpot is even bigger for Friday's drawing. An earlier report from City News Service reported the jackpot was estimated at $476 million, but by Thursday afternoon the Los Angeles Times reported it was closer to $540 million. Some folks went home with some cool cash after Tuesday's drawing. There were 47 tickets that matched five numbers, including nine in California; each is worth $308,573. (None were sold in Pali, however.) The other good news is that you still have a chance to win! Here's a list of a few places locally where you can buy a Mega Millions ticket for Friday's drawing. Which raises a …

Try this easy and delicious recipe that is sure to please everyone.
Purim falls on Adar 14, according to the Hebrew calendar, or March 7-8 on the secular calendar. This Jewish holiday celebrates Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai saving the Jews from an evil plot at the hands of the wicked Haman. The story of Purim is found in the biblical book of Ester, called the Megillah, which is read aloud twice during the holiday. Ever hear of the colloquial expression, "The whole Megillah?" Well, this is where that expression comes from. The quick version of the story of Purim goes like this: King Ahasuerus had a gorgeous wife, Queen Vashti. One day he hosted a huge party and he summoned Queen Vashti to the court to display her beauty. When Vashti refused to obey his command, King Ahasuerus had her killed for …
Purim, the Jewish festival of costumes, carnivals and holy chaos teaches vital lessons about carving out time for celebration.
Religion is often thought of as a formal, solemn affair. Purim, the Jewish festival that begins at sunset on Wednesday night and ends Thursday evening, turns that entire notion on its head. Revelers dress in elaborate, silly costumes, interrupt the Jewish rituals with explosive cheers and boos and are religiously encouraged (some say mandated) to have a bit too much to drink. It’s the biggest party of the Jewish year—a day of complete celebration, joy and even chaos. Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish community from near destruction at the hands of a power-crazed Persian vizier named Haman. As recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther, Haman nearly secured the King’s permission to wipe out the Jewish community, only to be foiled …

Don't just head out to the store for a box of chocolates, bake something special for your sweetheart.
What is the sweetest way to ask your valentine to "be mine?" Some might say it's chocolates, others might suggest a fancy dinner. However, there's something about tossing some flour and butter in the air to usher in romance. Palisadian Phyllis Amboss said she encountered a recipe for a Strawberry Hazelnut Torte in an old Australian cookbook. Amboss tweaked the recipe and she came up with her own version, which is posted on the Taste of Home website. The torte involves layers of meringues, cream and berries. "This beautiful dessert is a very big hit at parties," said Amboss on the Taste of Home website. Malibu Patch columnist Dorothy Reinhold recommends a recipe for Cookie Dough Truffles on her blog site Shockingly Delicious. Reinhold …

Very frequently I bike from central Beverly Hills to downtown Santa Monica and it takes me only 30 minutes if I don't tarry. And on most return trips after 4 pm I just marvel at both avoiding the jam and enjoying my own movement, under my own power. Once our roads become more friendly to cyclists, we'll reach the tipping point quickly: the bike will not only be more convenient as a choice, but …   more ›
