A headline about a Pacific Palisades High School graduate who recently passed away "seemed shockingly cold" to one reader. As a result, Patch has decided to change it out of respect for the deceased, his friends and his family.
Editor's Note: As a journalist, you're charged with giving your readers as much information as applicable while writing as concisely as possible and removing yourself and your opinion from the story. In that formula, it's easy to appear insensitive toward the feelings of those actually involved in the story. It was not this journalist's intention to offend the good name of the deceased, but rather to paint the most accurate picture and to be inclusive of those who may not have known the deceased or his story. Max Tinglof was a person with many friends and a loving family. The people who shared his story with Patch were quick to stress how great a person he was. Angela Collins wrote to Patch stating that she thought the headline on the …

Pacific Palisades High School senior Brandon Newman talks to Patch about his tribute video to Max Tinglof, a recent Pali High graduate who was killed in a car crash on Sunset Boulevard in November.
Brandon Newman, a Pali High senior and videographer for the lacrosse team, shares with Patch his reasons for paying tribute to Max Tinglof, a recent Pali High graduate who was killed in November when his car veered into a palm tree on Sunset Boulevard. Patch: How well did you know Max? Newman: I didn't know him extremely well. I was the videographer for the lacrosse team this past season, so I did spend quite a bit of time with the team. Max definitely showed his leadership both on the field and off the field in the clubhouse with his teammates. Patch: Why did you put this tribute video together? Newman: His death was the first passing of a person who I knew well enough to call a friend, which really hit home for me. I wanted to do …

William Smerling, a devoted family man who spent his life working long days, was finally starting to check things off his bucket list before his death last summer.
He was 82 years old, but he died young. In the eighth decade of a life defined by 15-hour workdays, Sunday trips with his wife and two sons and a stint in the Army, William Howard Smerling could charge up mountains faster than men half his age; worked just as hard, if not harder at his business, Brentwood Royal Cleaners, after retirement; and caught huge halibut when he fished in Alaska. Smerling was an “old-fashioned gentleman” from Brooklyn who died in August in Santa Monica. It's been six months, but his family is still reeling from the death. "My dad was 82.... Yeah, people would say he lived a good life, but he wasn't done with his bucket list," said son Robert. "It's a big loss." His dad's 6-foot frame was shattered—a broken pelvis, …

A talented actress, director and teacher Heidi Helen Davis believed in pushing theater beyond racial and gender boundaries. She died Dec. 15 after a year-long battle with breast cancer. She was 60. Davis had been an important figure at the Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga where she directed more than 20 plays including “The Cherry Orchard,” “Our Town” and “Long Day’s Journey into Night.” She began working with the theater in 1985 after Theatricum Botanicum Artistic Director Ellen Geer saw a piece she had directed on Japanese internment camps. Geer said Davis was a special director who gave the actors freedom and guided them with a “positive hand that released you rather than suppressed you.” Geer said the company all felt an artistic …
