Santa Monica Woman Volunteers 64 Years at Riviera

Phyllis Wade has made it a tradition to lend a hand for annual golf tournaments.

During her 64 years at the Riviera Country Club, Phyllis Wade has done everything from filling goodie bags, to putting trash boxes together, to even babysitting the golfers' kids.

"The way I started volunteering … I had a friend who was a member. And he called and he said, 'Would you like to work for the tournament this week?' And I said, 'Sure, why not?' He says, 'Good, because I already signed you up!'" recounted Wade.

Northern Trust Open General Manager Mike Bone told Patch the tournament has 30 volunteer chairs who manage about 900 volunteers.

"Not insignificantly, it also generates over $22 million each year in economic activity here in the market, which is the equivalent of about 200 full-time jobs," said Bone. "And in today's economic market, I think that's pretty significant."

Bone also said the tour generated over $1.6 million for local charities last year alone.

Being a Santa Monica resident, Phyllis told Patch the Riviera is one of her favorites.

"I enjoy doing it. And I figure, as long as I'm able, I'll keep doing it … as long as they want me," said Wade.
