Palisades High Athletes Honored at Senior Awards Program

Palisades High seniors Centkowski, Creer, Bailey and Jones are among the list of 2010-11 winners.

Palisades High held its annual Senior Awards Program last Thursday evening at the school's Mercer Hall and several students were honored for their athletic achievements.

Winning the James A. Mercer Scholar-Athlete Award was , who excelled in both soccer and lacrosse. He was one of the Dolphins' captains in soccer, tying for the lead in goals (11) and finishing second in assists (11) for a team-best 33 points at forward. As a midfielder on the lacrosse team he had 15 ground balls, five goals and three assists.

The Palisadian-Post Cup Awards, presented to the outstanding male and female senior athletes, went to and .

Creer was the offensive star for the Dolphins' football team, rushing for 1,270 yards, scoring 21 touchdowns and averaging a whopping 10.58 yards per carry. In the fall he will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder on a football scholarship after earning first team All-Western League and first team All-City Division II honors. 

Creer also played guard for the varsity basketball team, averaging 2.6 steals and 2.4 assists per game as the Dolphins reached the City Section Division I semifinals.

Bailey was the starting goalkeeper for the girls varsity soccer team, which was the City Section Division I runner-up, losing to El Camino Real 1-0 in overtime of the championship game. Bailey had 19 shutouts, allowed only five goals and made 144 saves in 1,252 minutes played. She also won a Margaret & Edwin Grimmer Masonic Scholarship.

was presented the Pacific Palisades Woman's Club athletics award, PCHS Booster Club Exceptional Scholar Athlete awards were given to and sisters and while was the recipient of the Travis DeZarn Memorial Scholarship.

Scharf was a co-captain on the boys varsity volleyball team, which won the Western League and finished runner-up in the City Section Division I playoffs. The opposite hitter/setter was named Player of the Year in league and was an All-City Division I first team pick. He was also presented an American Legion Post 283 Scholarship and a PTSA Community Service Award.

Fullerton was a member of the Dolphins' City championship girls varsity swim team. She swam the third leg on the 200-yard medley relay team that took second at the finals meet, she finished third in the 100 butterfly and swam fourth in the 200 individual medley. 

Second baseman Tara Farahdel was the lone senior on Palisades' Western League champion softball team, which lost in the quarterfinals of the City Section Division II playoffs. Sister Tina Farahdel was a team manager along with Lauren Dunn.

Jones was a defensive midfielder on the boys varsity lacrosse team, scoring three goals, and also played halfback and outside linebacker on the varsity football team.

Kling Family Scholar Athlete awards were presented to , and , got the Maggie Gilbert Memorial Scholarship for All-Around Achievement and Rose Gilbert Woman "Scholar Athlete" awards were given to and .

Thornton helped the boys tennis team win its third consecutive section title this spring, then finished second in the City Individual singles tournament, falling in three sets in the finals. 

Flyer was a captain and starting forward on the girls varsity basketball team and was a key contributor in the Dolphins' march to the City Division II championship. She averaged 9.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 2.5 blocks per game and was a first team All-Western League and second team All-City Division II choice and is ready to walk on at the University of Michigan.

Jeffers was the ace of the varsity baseball squad, earning Pitcher of the Year honors in the Western League for the first-place Dolphins and making the All-City second team. He is headed for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He was also presented an American Legion Post 283 Scholarship.

Elander was the second-leading scorer on the girls varsity soccer team and was an All-Western League first team pick after netting 16 goals and tallying four assists for 36 points at forward. She scored the winning goals in each of the Dolphins' first two games in the City playoffs.

Savage played midfield and defense for the Dolphins, scoring two goals. One of three Salutatorians, she was also awarded American Legion Post 283, Margaret & Edwin Grimmer and Dillon Henry Memorial scholarships.

Giglio was a member of the City championship swim team, taking sixth in the 100 breaststroke and swimming the second leg of the Dolphins' runner-up 200 medley relay in the City finals meet.
