Pali High Football to Scrimmage Kilpatrick

Coach Perry Jones schedules a practice game to prepare for the season opener.

Just as he did last year, varsity football coach has scheduled a Friday practice game against Camp Kilpatrick one week prior to his team's season opener September 9 at El Camino Real.

The Dolphins will scrimmage Kilpatrick on Sept. 2, with the junior varsity game kicking off at 11 a.m. and the varsity to follow at approximately 1 p.m. at .

The rules will be similar to those of a regular game, except there will be no kicking or special teams. Offenses will alternate running four sets of 12 plays. Once a team is inside the opponents' 25-yard line, the series is played out until the offense scores, turns the ball over or runs out of downs.

Jones said the scrimmage will be a helpful barometer of where his team is at and will give players a chance to line up against another team for the first time.

"We really just started practice and we can't go full force [in pads] until next week, so I won't know until next Thursday or Friday if we are ahead or behind where we were last year in terms of tackling."

Palisades won last year's practice game 24-12, but suffered a huge loss when junior running back rolled an ankle during the Dolphins' third possession, suffering a bone fracture and torn ligaments that sidelined him for the entire season.

The Dolphins' JV squad also won last season's practice game, three scores to one.

Kilpatrick is a boys' juvenile detention facility located in Malibu that fields athletic teams in baseball, basketball, football, soccer and wrestling. Its mascot is the Mustangs and they compete in the Alpha League in the CIF Southern Section.

"They're not afraid to hit you, they're very physical," Jones said of Kilpatrick. "It'll give us a chance to run our plays against another defense and give us a feel for what it'll be like the following week when it counts."

The Quarterback Club's Kickoff Breakfast and parent meeting will be held on Saturday, August 27. Call 310-230-6623 for details.
