Boys Soccer Advances to Quarterfinals

Palisades High boys and girls basketball teams also win playoff openers.

The Palisades High boys' soccer team has advanced to the second week of the City Section Large Schools playoffs with Friday afternoon's convincing 4-1 victory over Jefferson at Stadium by the Sea.

Steve Diaz scored the only goal of the first half on a header, then the fifth-seeded Dolphins (14-1-5) exploded for three more goals in the second half and Brandon Newman made eight saves in goal against the 12th-seeded Democrats (16-4-7).

Marvin Lemus scored two goals, one of them on a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area, and Jonny Lambour also scored for Palisades, the team will travel to No. 4 Wilmington Banning (11-2-1), the Marine League champion, for its quarterfinal game Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Boys Basketball

Ilya Ilyayev scored 15 points and Everett Osborne added 10 and 12 rebounds as the fifth-seeded Dolphins (17-12) routed 12th-seeded South Gate (15-12) last Thursday in the first round of the City Section Division I playoffs.

Palisades will travel to No. 4 Crenshaw for a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Coliseum League champion Cougars (19-8) cruised past 13th-seeded Los Angeles Jordan, 93-44, in the first round.

Girls Basketball

Head coach Torino Johnson's squad flexed its muscles in Friday night's City Section Division II playoff opener, outscoring visiting Maywood Academy 33-0 in the first quarter on its way to a 102-30 victory.

Asia Smith had 20 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and four steals, Nicole Flyer had 16 points and five rebounds, Skai Thompson had 15 points and Ashlie Bruner added 11 points, five rebounds, 16 assists and 11 steals for the top-seeded Dolphins (21-9), who will host North Hollywood (12-8) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
