LAUSD Board Member Steve Zimmer Honored as Elected Official of the Year

The California Association of School Counselors will present the award on Saturday.

The following is a press release from the Los Angeles Unified School District

Los Angeles Board of Education Member Steve Zimmer is being honored Saturday as the 2012-13 Elected Official of the Year by the California Association of School Counselors.

As a strong advocate for students, Board Member Zimmer fights for school counselors during this era of budget cuts because he understands their critical importance. He is a 16-year veteran teacher, counselor, advocate and community activist. His work on innovative classroom programs, service learning, school-based intervention services, community organizing and school community relations is widely known throughout Southern California.

As a member of the Board of Education, he prioritizes the needs of students and families, as evidenced by his resolution, “Ensuring Access to Quality Academic College and Career Counseling.” It was approved in June by the Los Angeles School Board.  The resolution acknowledged the lack of support services for students in the District, and also established directions to correct it.

The recipient of this honor is selected because he or she is actively involved with achieving excellence in the areas of student support and for outstanding contribution and dedication to the field of school counseling. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place Saturday at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
