Trutanich and Feuer, Both Running for City Attorney, Debate at SOHA Meeting [Video]

The two disagreed on many issues, including the salary of the City Attorney and the reduced supervision of parolees.

City Attorney Carmen Trutanich and Assemblyman Mike Feuer participated in a lively debate at the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association meeting at Notre Dame High School Wednesday evening.

The two are both running for City Attorney; the L.A. Times reported in October that the race will be "intense" and "rancorous." Greg Smith, a lawyer, is also running, but was not part of the debate.

The debate was divided by the moderator into three sections: opening statements from the candidates were followed by the two asking each other questions, and this was followed by moderator-read questions from the audience.

They talked about their positions on a variety of issues, from recent changes in parolee supervision law (AB 109), the salary for the position of City Attorney and the problem of school truancy to how they voted on election propositions like the abolition of the death penalty, labeling genetically modified food and Measure J.

Click on the videos to see each candidate asking the other a question (one about parolee supervision laws and another about the salary of the City Attorney).

And bookmark this page to check back for more Patch videos of the debate this week, including coverage of the two candidates' positions on marijuana and the law and how they voted on the Measures on the Nov. 6 ballot.

What do you think about the opinions of the two candidates, as expressed in the SOHA debate? Tell us in the comments!

Correction: an earlier version of this story said that Greg Smith was not at the meeting. A reader wrote in to let us know that he was, in fact, in the audience.

Actually, Greg Smith DID attend the meeting, so you got that fact wrong, Northridge Patch...it's just that Smith wasn't invited to particpate in the City Attorney debate by SOHA...and exclusionary pratices seem to be the norm, and are a major problem for this group. Is SOHA anti-democratic? They are planning a mayoral debate for January with usual suspects Garcetti, Greuel and Jan Perry, but, again, have excluded the brightest star of our local political firmament, mayoral candidate, Kevin James, from the debate. When I asked them why, they said they "couldn't get ahold of him." Yeah...right. I hope that SOHA includes Kevin James in their mayoral debate for January....otherwise they'll lose any credibility they have left for hosting honest and dependable debates that let voters know about ALL their choices.

Thank you, Michael! I attended the meeting but was not aware that Greg Smith was present in the audience.

Your legal articles are really worth to be read. I think, you know a lot of good attorneys who can provide good legal services for people. If you know such lawyers, add them please to my Attorney Directory http://attorney-online.info/dir I provide there short descriptions of legal practice and experience of attorneys as well as admissions and membership in professional associations. It can help to evaluate several attorneys at once an choose a legal professional quickly. I think, that your friends should be in this directory.

Congratulations to SOHA for hosting the first City Attorney debate, and shame on SOHA for not allowing Greg Smith to participate. If SOHA thought they were doing Carmen Trutanich a favor by not allowing a real lawyer with real experience to challenge Trutanich's pie in the sky claims, they wasted their efforts and tarnished their credibility. Trutanich has no chance of being re-elected after his humiliating defeat in his disastrous attempt to use the City Attorney's office as a political springboard to the DA's office. Voters rejected him in 2012, and they'll do it again in 2013. Trutanich cannot be trusted to tell the truth about anything. Just look at the reasons he gave for not taking a pay cut like all the other lawyers, secretaries and other support staff in his office - he said it was because his wife lost her pension and she and their 'four children' all have to live on his $215,000 a year salary. But moments earlier, he was extolling the great achievements of his 'children,' and guess what? They are all adults and all gainfully employed. So how can Trutanich keep a straight face and make such a ridiculous claim to the audience? Worse, shame on everyone, including Mike Feuer, for being asleep at the wheel and not catching Trutanich trying to sell them snake oil. Next time, give Greg Smith a chance to speak, it will be better than listening to an empty suit and an empty head.
