L.A. Primary Nomination Election Candidates Can Begin Filing

According to the city clerk's office, filing the declaration of intention and submitting a qualifying nominating petition are required in order to appear on the March 5, 2013 primary nominating election ballot.

Potential candidates for the 2013 City of Los Angeles Primary Nominating Election may take the first step to legally and officially declare their candidacy by filing a "declaration of intention to become a candidate" with the office of the city clerk-election division beginning Monday, Nov. 5 at 8 a.m. According to the city clerk's office, filing the declaration of intention and submitting a qualifying nominating petition are required in order to appear on the March 5, 2013 primary nominating election ballot. 

The Declaration of Intention to Become a Candidate must be filed with the Election Division Monday, Nov. 5 through Friday, Nov. 9, between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 10 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Candidates who have filed their declaration of intention may obtain their nominating petitions beginning Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. The period to file completed nominating petitions ends on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.

To summarize, all candidates must file their Declaration of Intention and nominating petitions at the Election Division during the periods as noted below:

Declaration of intention filing period: Nov. 5 - 10, 2012*

Nomination petition filing period: Nov. 10 - Dec. 5, 2012**

Location:  Piper Technical Center, Office of the City Clerk - Election Division555 Ramirez St., Space 300, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Office Hours:  Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and the one Saturday of November 10, 2012 only from 8 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

*For filing the Declaration of Intention to Become a Candidate, the Election Division will be open on one Saturdayonly: Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

** During filing for the Nominating Petition, the Election Division will be closed on Monday, November 12, 2012 for the Veterans Day holiday.

The Office of the City Clerk - Election Division administers elections for the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the Los Angeles Community College District.  The City’s Primary Nominating Election will be held March 5, 2013 and the General Municipal Election will be held May 21, 2013.  More information can be found on the Election Division’s website at: http://cityclerk.lacity.org/election/.
