, a paramedic firefighter at in Pacific Palisades, pedaled 3,300 miles to New York City for "Ride for 9-11," a bike ride in honor of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. He was joined by five other Southern California firefighters.

"You'd wake up at 5:30 in the morning, get on the bike by 6, you'd ride 140 miles," said Ostrovsky. "You'd get to the city and you're greeted by the fire departments and the police departments and the people of the city."

Just days before Sept. 11, the firefighters reached their destination and rode directly to the Firemen's Memorial. It was Ostrovsky's first visit to New York City.

"I remember, I looked over to Jim Prahbu—we came up with this idea—and I look at him and I go, 'Oh my God, I can't believe we actually did this. I can't believe we pedaled our way to New York City,'" said Ostrovsky.

Ostrovsky spent Sept. 11 at a fire house, Ladder 35, Engine 40 in New York, a crew that lost 11 firefighters that morning 10 years ago.

"It felt like we were a part of this whole thing. And it felt like a sense of relief for me to just be able to say thank you to the families and thank you to the firemen that were there," said Ostrovsky. "And—more than anything else—I just remember saying to myself, 'Thanks for everything those guys gave that day.'"
