Original report:

A tree is blocking traffic on Chautauqua Boulevard, reports Gates Security.

The accident happened at 5:11 this morning, said Gustavo Sanchez of Gates Security.

Los Angeles police officials said the tree had fallen into the road and an SUV- hit it in the southbound lane of Chautauqua between Sunset Boulevard and Borgos Place.

Chautauqua will be closed in that area for three hours, Sanchez said. As of 8:37 a.m., it was still closed.

This report is almost entirely erroneous. The tree fell prior to the SUV hitting the tree. The tree was dead and neighbors asked the City of LA to have it removed more than 1 year ago. The city refused to remove the tree stating that dead trees don't fall. There are no street lights where the tree fell, and with wet and pitch black roads it's no wonder that the tree was hit. It's amazing that the tree didn't cause more accidents.

Peter, you are right. The first information was incorrect (happens in breaking news situations). I confirmed with LAPD that the tree came down first. The driver ran into it after it had fallen. Thanks for helping out.

How then do you correct and incorrect headline? "A collision with an SUV knocked [the tree] down." Everyone knows who did it and it reflects poorly on that individual when the headline is wrong?

apologies. I corrected the story. There's a technical reason why that sub-head doesn't show up while I edit. I'll fix now.
