A total of 244 tons of prescription drugs were turned in nationwide during collections at over 5,200 sites last September, according to the LAPD.

"Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse," according to an LAPD statement.

Flushing medications down the toilet or disposing of them in the trash both pose potential safety and health hazards, according to the LAPD, which plans to hold Take Back events along with the DEA every few months.
