DUI Crackdown Nets 550 Arrests in L.A. County

The checkpoints and saturation patrols continue through the next week.

A on drunken and drug-impaired motorists resulted in 550 arrests, authorities reported Monday.

The "Avoid the 100" campaign, which ran from Friday night through late Sunday, involved 100 deployments countywide. Last year during the same period, 663 DUI arrests were made, said Glendora police Officer Wendy Brewer, an Avoid coordinator.

The Avoid program is part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

In the coming days, extra DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are planned in Los Angeles, Bell Gardens, South Pasadena, Whittier, Norwalk, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, Norwalk, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach and Torrance, among other locations.

The Avoid campaign will coincide with the California Highway Patrol's "Maximum Enforcement Period," which is set for Labor Day weekend. During the MEP, 80 percent of the CHP's officers hit the streets to nab intoxicated motorists, speeders and other traffic violators.
