Community Corner

Parking Meters

One of the unwanted aggravations of modern Palisadian life is coping with militantly predatory meter maids who roam our streets like relentless sharks; hell-bent on writing exorbitant fines without any consideration of community reaction.  When you think about it, the fine amount for exceeding the time paid for on the meter is wildly out of proportion to the offense.  Ignoring the actual egregious behaviors of parking in the red zone, etc., failing to return to one's meter in time to drop a quarter is most certainly not an offense worth $68 or more.  At some point these usury fees become government theft.  If money is needed for the government coffers, create a legitimate tax.  The parking ticket penalty has spun out of control and creates a tremendous animosity between the citizens and the meter maids who most certainly have quotas to fill.  They are simply far too aggressive and obnoxious to be simply "doing their job".  I would support a neighborhood brigade of volunteers who would wander our streets with a pocket full of quarters, looking for expired meters to reset.  Maybe if the quotas were impossible to fill policies would change.
