Letter: Applauding LAUSD for Giving Students Healthy Food Options

Nicole J. Jones, a volunteer with the American Heart Association, writes a letter to the editor about food services in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

To the Editor,

As a volunteer of the American Heart Association, I am pleased to hear that the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has taken an important step toward creating a generation of healthier Americans by passing a resolution to monitor and improve the quality of food and nutrition on school grounds.[http://brentwood.patch.com/articles/l-a-school-menus-to-keep-aiming-high-in-childhood-obesity-fight] With mass marketing and media messaging targeting our youth, many children are inclined to pass up nutritious fruits and vegetables for unhealthier options.

LAUSD’s move will make it easier for students to have access to healthy meals. In addition to making healthier food and beverages available, LAUSD is also increasing the time limits that children have during meal time. The American Heart Association’s mission is building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. I applaud LAUSD for bringing us closer to this mission by continuing to lead in the fight against childhood obesity.
