Does "June gloom" usually linger into July for coastal Los Angeles? I could be overreacting since I'm used to cloudy and rainy seasons from the east coast, but I've noticed some mornings this month in Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica where the clouds hang around into the afternoon.
James Murakami, staff meteorologist in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), said Tuesday that it is unusual to enter the third week of July where there are more common days where the cloud cover does not break away until later in the day.
"It will occur from time to time," he said. "Low clouds along the coast are not as quite as common in July as it is in May and June, but it does occur. In the Palisades area near the coast, I would say at least half of the month of July in mornings, you’ll get the clouds."
Murakami said in a typical July and June, the morning clouds clear fairly quickly, like between 8 and 9 a.m. However this month on some days, which Murakami said is common for "June gloom," the cloud cover does not clear until 12 or 1 p.m.
"It’s least prevalent in August through September," he said. "It’s unusual that it's more common. If you had one or two incidents in a month, that will happen in most years, but it also usually tends to happen in the first couple of weeks, and we’re now into third week, and it’s still going on."
Murakami noted that 2010 marked an usually cool July for the area. He said no matter the season in Southern California, the weather pattern is dominated by the sea breeze and right now the ocean waters are colder than normal, so whenever a sea breeze pattern comes, depending on that breeze, that cool ocean air is coming in and contributing to the prolonged cloud cover.

Victoria Ordin Not usually.... Bizarre phenomenon both in LA and SB whereby 4th of July is bright and sunny!
Michele Miller Baron Two summers ago it lasted all summer! Better for us locals though, kept it a little quiet over here. No rain or humidity like the east coast though!!
Alan Reed "June" gloom is wishful thinking...get used to it year round
