Celebrate Earth Day on the Westside

There are a few things you can do from Pali to Westwood in honor of our planet!

Earth Day is an occasion to celebrate Mother Nature and the effort to go green. Organizations and businesses all along the Westside are featuring events to encourage Angelenos to appreciate the environment, while having a great time!

In Pacific Palisades, there will be an on Sunday, April 22. The event is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the . Since the park is run by volunteers and receives no city money, donations are needed to keep up with maintenance expenses. For every donation, guests will receive an eco-friendly, reusable shopping bag, courtesy of Palisadian Jim Palladino. Also, everyone who stops by will be able to pick up a free tomato plant … while supplies last. Palisadian Bruce Schwartz helped spark a project to grow tomato plants and they are now ready to come out of the green house! The Village Green is a triangle-shaped park framed by Antioch Street, Swarthmore Avenue and Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades.

At every local , including the Palisades, you can enjoy 20 cents off of your beverage if you bring in your own mug or tumbler. This is actually something the store does on a daily basis, but it seemed fitting to mention it on a day when "reuse" is a key word! If you don't have a travel mug, the store offers a selection of tumblers that are made of 97 percent recycled material.

Topanga will be hosting its celebrations at the Topanga Community House Fair Grounds on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to sunset. The event will feature music, food, guest speakers, ecological artists and workshops! There is a suggested donation of $12 for entry. The event will benefit "The Love and Haiti Project" and "Kids Make A Difference." The fair grounds are located at 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Topanga.

In Malibu, the city is offering two free public events. One is the , which is a sustainable LEED-certified structure. The ceremony will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday, featuring special guests Pierce Brosnan and Dick van Dyke. The library is located at 23519 West Civic Center Way in Malibu. The second event is the from 12-3 p.m. on Sunday at Legacy Park, which is located directly across the street from the Malibu Library. The festival will have booths, a native plant sale, food and more!

Heal the Bay will also be hosting beach cleanup activities along the coast on Saturday and Sunday. There is a beach cleanup on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Santa Monica Beach. On Sunday, April 22, there is a Kayak and Beach Cleanup from 9-11 a.m. at Surfrider Beach in Malibu. There will also be a weekend-long Earth Day event at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium on both Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

In Westwood, the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Hammer Museum feature a screening of Oceans at the Billy Wilder Theater. The screening is on Sunday, April 22 at 11 a.m. In celebration of Earth Day, the documentary will take you under water to meet sharks, whales and more! The theater is located at 10899 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles.
