Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving

One of the most difficult times of the year for those trying to maintain a healthy diet and fitness routine is the holiday season. While the holidays are a time to get together with family and friends, every party and gathering is also an excuse to take a holiday from your healthy heating habits. A cookie here, a chocolate there, washed down with some wine, and before you know it your pants are too tight.

Here are some tips for getting through Thanksgiving:

• Begin your day as any other day on the plan; do not skip meals to save calories or carbohydrates.

• Eat a protein-packed snack an hour before your holiday meal.

• Scan the spread before putting anything on your plate. Choose wisely!

• Who doesn’t love gravy?  Try to drizzle it over your entire plate rather than pouring it on top.

• Be mindful of served portion sizes; start small, you can always go back for more!

• Have plenty of water on the table and readily available

• Start the meal with a soup, fresh vegetables, or a salad, and avoid any refined flour pastries or sweet appetizers to prevent the cycle of craving.

• Drink two glasses of water with lemon before the meal

• Drink a cup of hot water with lemon after you are finished eating.

• Remember to not beat yourself up and enjoy the day, enjoy the food, enjoy life!
