Blog: New Year New Discussion

With a new year we must start exploring new ideas and introducing new perspective into the tired council chambers.

Dear Neighbor,

Happy New Year! 2013 is going be an exciting year for the City of Los Angeles. We will be electing a new Mayor, new Controller, new City Attorney and new Council Members. With new elected officials, Los Angeles has the opportunity to start a new discussion in City Hall.

Los Angeles faces over a 1 billion dollar deficit over the next 4 years, a 10% unemployment rate, over 10 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, deteriorating infrastructure and declining services. We face these obstacles despite over a 20% increase in revenue since 2005. Something is not working.

It is time to start focusing on what Los Angeles does have and making sure it runs smoothly. We need to focus like a laser beam on our services, see where it is lacking, why it is lacking and take the responsible course of action. Let’s get back to the basics!

With a new year we must start exploring new ideas and introducing new perspective into the tired council chambers. All institutions fear new voices and change rarely comes from filtered establishment candidates. We need neighbors from our community who have no obligations to special interests and can view issues through a common sense prism.

The direction of our city will be voted on March 5, 2013. Our district has an amazing opportunity to hold city hall accountable and to challenge the status quo. In order to have our needs in Council District 11 met we must change the way we approach city issues. With your help, I can bring a new perspective to the debate and help reorient the discussion. Happy New Year,
