A Valuable Evacuation Exercise in Mandeville Canyon

A VALUABLE EVACUATION EXERCISE

Jerry Adomian; Director-BHHA, Member-Brentwood Community Council, & The Tri-Association Task Force

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) held a Wildfire Evacuation Exercise in Mandeville Canyon under the command of the Los Angeles Police Department on Sunday, May 18, 2014, from 10 am to 1 pm, followed by a safety fair at Paul Revere Middle School which lasted until 3 pm. Police patrolled our streets while we were away to prevent possible looting.

Those who protect us needed to practice an evacuation in our 5 mile long Cul de Sac. Our resident's experience will hopefully help avoid panic if wildfire comes our way. LAFD asked the 3 Homeowner Associations (HA) within the canyon, Brentwood Hills Homeowners Association (BHHA, Mandeville Canyon Association (MCA), Upper Mandeville Canyon Association (UMCA) for their help to get their residents to participate to make the drill as realistic as possible.

The 3 HA launched an intensive campaign to help advertise this drill, including knocking on doors, handouts, email, info on HA's websites, articles in the Brentwood News, Brentwood Patch, and endorsements from our local politicians.

Firefighters, police and those who support them, were present to answer questions regarding emergency preparation and ways to protect your family when wildfire threatens. Food trucks were also available. Kids enjoyed using the ball field. TV channels covered the event.

Thank you LAFD and LAPD for your great effort!
