Wednesday Vehicle Crash on PCH Possible Suicide Attempt

The driver of the Lexus was not a resident of Malibu.

The man whose Lexus crashed on Pacific Coast Highway near Latigo Canyon Road and knocked down two power poles Wednesday morning may have been trying to commit suicide, Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's officials said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau is in charge of the investigation.

Sgt. Phil Brooks, head of traffic for Malibu/Lost Hills Station, said the man is not a Malibu resident. Sgt. Eric Lasko said the man, who was airlifted in critical condition to Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, is expected to live. He said the man's name would probably not be released because "there could be a medical issue."

The collision happened shortly before 11 a.m. not far from the scene of . A photo on NBC Los Angeles' website shows Los Angeles County firefighters cutting off the vehicle's roof to rescue the man.

All lanes of Pacific Coast Highway in the area were initially closed after the collision. Both eastbound lanes were opened by 12 p.m. and one westbound lane was opened about 20 minutes later. The remaining westbound lane was opened Thursday at 6:15 a.m.

The crash caused a power outage for 993 customers, Southern California Edison spokesman Paul Klein said. Most had their power restored within 10 minutes. Power was restored for additional customers throughout the day. The final 16 customers got their power back Thursday at 5:15 a.m.
