Parents, Community Leaders Join Coalition Opposing Location of Second LADWP Station

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power proposed a site on Marquez Avenue, next to Marquez Charter Elementary School in Pacific Palisades.

Community leaders and parents have joined together to form the "Coalition of Palisadians to Keep Marquez Charter Safe." According to the coalition statement, it is an effort to "spearhead the community's continuing efforts to oppose the DWP's proposed power station next to Marquez Charter."

According to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, due to increased power requirements in the Palisades, a second station is needed. The LADWP proposed two sites: one behind and the other on Marquez Avenue, next to .

During a town hall meeting on Feb. 29, representatives from the LADWP made presentations and discussed the options with the community. Community leaders say over 200 people attended the meeting, many of whom asked about possible health risks associated with electromagnetic frequency.

"DWP was left with the clear task to find available land other than the two preferred sites on Marquez and Fire Station 23," stated Marquez Knolls Property Owners Association Vice President Haldis Toppel, in an email to Pali Patch following the meeting.

To support the residents of Marquez Knolls, the Marquez Charter Elementary School, and the Marquez Charter Elementary School parents in opposition to the location of a power distribution station on Marquez Avenue next to Marquez Charter Elementary School.

According to Toppel, a local attorney who lives on Marquez has distributed a petition opposing the Marquez Avenue location. Coalition organizers say it has garnered over 450 signatures.
