Lane Closures at LAX Announced

Beginning Tuesday, several lanes on the lower/arrival level at Los Angeles International Airport will be closed, thanks to airport improvements. Officials ask visitors to avoid driving through the summer.

Three inner lanes on the lower/arrivals level at Los Angeles International Airport will be closed between Terminal 3 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal beginning today as part of the airport's overall LAneXt airport modernization program. The curbside lane along the same stretch on the upper/departures level will also be closed.

In addition, escalators and stairways on the north end of the Bradley Terminal will be closed.

The press release from Los Angeles World Airports does not say when the lanes on the lower level will be re-opened, but the curbside lane on the upper level is expected to re-open at the end of July, 2012, and the escalators and stairways are expected to re-open at the end of September.

There will also be several lane restrictions at night through the month of June, but they are expected to cause few traffic problems as the closures will happen between 1 and 5 a.m.

The extended lower level lane closures are due to the replacement of the airport's Central Utility Plant, which will update the airport's heating, air conditioning and electricity systems. The release said that future lane closures are upcoming as upgraded distribution and plant piping are installed in all of the terminals.

The Bradley Terminaln escalator and stairway closure will enable updates to the front of the building. The south escalators and stairs will remain open.

Airport officials are asking the public to avoid driving to LAX or to plan extra time to get through the airport complex. Real time traffic updates are available at http://trafficinfo.lacity.org/html/lax.html. Persons picking up visitors can also use the cell phone lot at the corner of 96th Street and Vicksburg Avenue to wait in, until their arriving party calls them and lets them know that they're on the terminal sidewalk. Persons picking up visitors should also consider parking and going into the terminal to wait rather than driving repeadtedly around the complex.

In addition, airport officials are recommending public transportation, in particular the Fly-Away buses, with the nearest stop to Pacific Palisades being in Westwood.
