Animal-rights activists gathered at Santa Monica City Hall Wednesday afternoon, calling on authorities to seek a more peaceful approach to wildlife that may wander into urban areas.
, a mountain lion was killed last week after it was spotted in a courtyard on Second Street in Santa Monica. Authorities told Santa Monica Patch that officers shot the mountain lion to keep it from heading into downtown.
Those gathered at City Hall Wednesday asked the Santa Monica Police Department and Fish and Game to call wildlife experts the next time a wild animal wanders into the city.
"Use the residents you have living in this big city and let us help you," said Santa Monica resident and veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Conrad. "And then wildlife doesn’t have to die for the misfortune of ending up in one of our cities."
