Getty Villa's 'Sicily' Exhibit Contains 3 Major Must-See Sculptures

L.A. Times Art Critic Christopher Knight examines the latest antiquities exhibit at the Pacific Palisades museum.

Stop by the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades for the newest antiquities exhibit "Sicily: Art and Invention Between Greece and Rome," which includes 85 sculptures (including three major ones), painted vases, gold ritual vessels, playful architectural decorations and various object-fragments demonstrate the artistic sophistication of the era, according to a full arts review by the Los Angeles Times.

The exhibition was co-organized by Getty curator Claire Lyons and Michael Bennett of the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, where it travels in September.

The exhibit aims to depict how Sicilian antiquity was not just the passive recipient of Greek culture between its colonization late in the 8th century BC and its Roman conquest half a millennium later.
