Viewfinder: Welcome to the Getty Villa

A cultural behemoth in our midst, the Getty Villa, with grounds as beautiful as the art in its permanent collection, is breathtaking to some.

With its extensive and impressive collection of 44,000 Greek, Roman, and other antiquities dating from 6,500 B.C. to 400 A.D., the Getty Villa, just off of PCH at Coastline, originally opened in 1954. In the aftermath of the opening of the $1-billion Getty Center, which became the Getty Foundation's prime destination, the Getty Villa, temporarily shuttered, was re-opened in 2006.

Today, the Getty Villa is a thriving cultural spot in itself, with terrific gardens and views. And while it is sometimes referred to as the Getty Villa in Malibu, as it borderlines the community, the Villa is technically located in Pacific Palisades.
