Top 5 Westside Stories: Pot, Smugglers, Cruiser, Cakes and PickUp
End your week with a handful of the Westside's best posts.
After a busy week, you might have missed a few stories that led our Patch sites on the Westside. Here's a recap:
Tons of Marijuana: A raid at Topanga State Park revealed about more than 5,000 pounds of marijuana plants along with 500 pounds of trash and cultivation gear. The haul is worth about $2.5 million, said California State Parks. This post rolled up more than 40 comments, so join in the discussion.
They're on a Boat: Sticking with weed, Zuma Beach lifeguards assisted in the takedown of a pair of alleged pot smugglers from Mexico, who arrived on a panga boat. A Coast Guard helicopter and two Coast Guard boats were sent to the area, along with a sheriff's boat, and authorities stopped the suspects' boat after chasing it down. The lifeguards spotted the boat first.
Cruiser Lives!: Cruiser, the abused pitbull that was tossed into a trunk and eventually left to die in Culver City, has finally found a home. Funds are being raised to help get him there now.
Sad Cakes: In an effort to raise money and awareness for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Depressed Bakery pop-up shop comes on Aug. 23 and 24 to Venice Boulevard, bearing grey donuts, blue-velvet cupcakes and other glum-looking fare.
WeHo's PickUp: A free trolley helps weekend partiers home safely while providing music and a photo booth during the ride. It's called the PickUp, and it runs up and down Santa Monica Boulevard, from Fairfax Avenue to Robertson Boulevard, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
