Coastal Cleanup Day Looks to Break Records

Pre-registrations for volunteers at Will Rogers State Beach, one of many sites around the world that will be spruced up Saturday, are running three times as high as last year.

Saturday morning, hundreds of volunteers are expected at Will Rogers State Beach to join in the international Coastal Cleanup Day.

Heal the Bay is organizing cleanups in Los Angeles County, which it has done for 21 years now, said the group's communications director, Matthew King. More than 105 countries around the world will also feature cleanups.

King noted that Will Rogers Beach will be among the busier sites.

"We're expecting over 500 people at that location," he said. "It's one of our more popular sites."

King said that last year, more than 14,000 volunteers collected 103,000 pounds of debris and trash at locations throughout Los Angeles County. But this year looks to be an even bigger event.

"Our pre-registrations are already over three times what they were last year," King said.

People interested in volunteering to pick up trash and otherwise clean up can arrive at Will Rogers State Beach, at Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon Road, at 9 a.m. Or they can sign up online here at Heal the Bay's Coastal Cleanup Day site. The site lists all 65 cleanup sites in Los Angeles County.

The Will Rogers site will also feature an electronic waste collection, so participants can turn in their old mobile phones, video games and other such waste for recycling.
