I want to alert the community about of a young con artist making the rounds in our neighborhoods. On the evening of Feb 2 she visited houses on 700
block of Wildomar Ave. and also the 1600 blocks of Northfield St. and Junaluska Way. Suspect is going by the name of "Angel Zimmerman," posing as a UC Irvine archaeology student and soliciting donations for her fellow students to travel on an archaeological visit to Mexico and Belize.
She is selling books through a company called "Experience
Sales". The funds are allegedly to partially go toward books to be donated to LA Children's Hospital, the rest is purported to be given to the fundraising of her school program.
She claims her parents live on a nearby street (in our case Muskingum). She is very engaging and a few of our neighbors have been taken in by her detailed story.
However, our subsequent web research shows this is an established scam used throughout the US. The various posted complaints describe ploys strikingly similar in many particulars. (One incidence in AZ describes a young man with a similar m.o. who even used the same last name.)
Internet accounts say that organized groups of these young con artists are often dropped off in communities. So if a young person comes to your door soliciting donations and claiming to be from your neighborhood please be very wary. We have alerted Officer Moore on this issue and suggest that you report such suspicious activity immediately to the police.
Those who have written checks should cancel them, and also contact their banks to prevent check fraud.
We are trying to get the word out about such scams so tell a friend!
