Ski Channel's 'Winter' Premieres Sunday

Written and directed by Palisadian Steve Bellamy, the film debuts in Westwood.

Ever wonder what it would be like to fly to the summit of Mt. Everest or ski down one of the world's steepest slopes? If so, you won't want to miss the Los Angeles premiere of Winter, The Ski Channel's latest project, which will be shown at the Regency Village Theater in Westwood on Sunday evening, Dec. 4.

Steve Bellamy, Chairman and CEO of The Ski Channel television network, wrote and directed the film, which took a year to produce and was shot in nearly 100 locations worldwide. It tells the stories of some of the world’s most inspiring and accomplished athletes, including Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety, women’s ski pioneer Sarah Burke, world record holder Simon Dumont and a plethora of the globe's best action and mountain sports athletes, most of whom will attend the premiere and various screenings around the country.

“Winter” features hit songs from The Sea Of Memories, the new album by the band Bush, and the film's title track, The Sound Of Winter, is No. 1 on both the U.S. alternative and rock charts. "Steve [Bellamy] sent me the trailer and I was very surprised," Bush vocalist/guitarist Gavin Rossdale said. "It was brilliant footage of insane skiers, which I love to watch. We sent him The Sound Of Winter and thought it could be a perfect fit."

Winter takes viewers into the history of U.S. skiing through the 10th Mountain Division, the ski infantry unit that helped win World War II with its triumph in Italy. Those same soldiers came back and birthed the ski industry. Like last year’s film The Story, which claimed awards at 12 Film Festivals, Winter chronicles the quirky, unusual and astonishing. Mountain Unicyclist Kris Holm rides the lip of a 2,500-foot cliff, Julian Carr front-flips from a 210-foot drop and Mike Wilson and Rory Bushfield perform stunts that will leave viewers scratching their heads.

“This year’s film is a non-stop thrill ride,” said Bellamy, also owner and founder of the Palisades Tennis Center. “Viewers journey to the top of Everest, they look over the edge of insane ski descents, they fly like a bird and they hear firsthand why these people assume these risks. The stories are not always pretty and don’t always end well, but there is hardly anything on screen that isn’t jaw-dropping or mesmerizing. And although the film is a deep narrative, it sits on a bed of high octane, racing fuel tracks from Bush that we will be listening to in 20 years.”

Fittingly, the first L.A. screening will be at the historic Village Theater, which has hosted premieres from the James Bond movies to Batman and Harry Potter. The red carpet event will feature the majority of the athletes in the film as well as many mainstream celebrities and VIPs. A portion of the proceeds will go to Protect Our Winters, a nonprofit organization started in 2007 by professional  snowboarder Jeremy Jones to unite and mobilize the global snow sports community against climate change.

Red Carpet arrivals are at 5:30 p.m., an athlete question-and-answer session follows at 6:30 and the film will be shown shortly thereafter.

Among the stars of the film who will attend Sunday's premiere are:

Sean Pettit, currently one of the world's top skiers and winner of the Line Catcher and the Cold Rush.

Mike Wilson, who is renowned for his quadruple gainer off a 100-foot rope swing into Lake Tahoe on YouTube. He is hands-down one of the best action sports athletes in the world.

Julian Carr, the cliffhucker who holds the world record for his 210-foot inverted front flip in Engleberg, Switzerland.

Rory Bushfield, a world champion skier who is married to four-time X-Games gold medalist Sarah Burke. He has pushed the art of "jumping off things" further than practically anyone in the world.

Melissa Arnot, one of the world’s preeminent high-altitude climbers, who scaled Mt. Everest with a broken leg.

Ted Davenport, one of the world's foremost extreme skiers and wing suit flyers, who the World Heli Challenge two years in a row.

Bobby Brown, the only winter sports athlete to earn a perfect score at the X-Games—and he did so twice.

Matt Reardon, a freeski champion who turned into a rock star after wrecking his leg at the World Heli Championships. He now skis in the winter and tours in the summer.

Johnny DeCesare, the mogul skier-turned-filmmaker who chronicled the freeski movement from the beginning through his Poor Boyz Productions.

The event will also feature other athletes and celebrities, notably Olympic gold medalist Stephani Victor, songwriter Linda Thompson, actresses Melissa Rivers, Donna Mills, Amy Smart, Wendie Malick, Camryn Manheim, Sara Foster and Annie Potts, television host Vince Van Patten, producer Tony Berg, beach volleyball great Sinjin Smith and pro tennis players Mike and Bob Bryan, Mike Tommy Haas, Chuck Adams, Ashley Harkleroad, Vince Spadea, Jill Craybus, Derrick Rostagno and Sloane Stephens.

Also starring in the project are two-time X-Games gold medalist Jen Hudak, Senator Bob Dole, a 10th Mountain Division veteran, Olympic gold medal skier Phil Mahre, Olympic silver medal skier Steve Mahre, freeski Icon Andy Mahre, freeskier and human flyer Karina Hollekim, ski bum and human flyer Chip Hildebrand, skier and climber Kirk Bauer.
