The media tent has been busy since practice rounds for the Northern Trust Open kicked off Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. However, on Friday, and with Phil Mickelson drawing quite a crowd, television stations, reporters and photographers are starting to set up for a weekend of heavy competition.

Thirty players didn't finish their first round after play was called due to darkness at 5:42 p.m. Thursday. The first-round leaderboard had San Diego-born Phil Mickelson at the number one spot, finishing five under par.

The rest of the leaderboard was as follows:

  • J.B. Holmes, 67 (-4)
  • Hunter Mahan, 67 (-4)
  • Jonathan Byrd, 68 (-3)
  • Carl Pettersson, 68 (-3)
  • Troy Matteson, 68 (-3)

Another fan favorite, Freddie Couples, teed off at 7:16 a.m. Friday, kicking off the second round of the tournament. Couples was accompanied by Sergio Garcia and Jason Day. Hunter Mahan, who was born in Orange and went to USC, also teed off at 7:16 a.m. with Geoff Ogilvy and Vijay Singh.

Mickelson teed off at 7:27 a.m., followed by Ernie Els and Justin Leonard at 7:48 a.m.

Northern Trust Open defending champion Aaron Baddeley, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson teed off shortly after noon.

We'll see if Mickelson can hold the lead. Wouldn't it be perfect for a SoCal player to win at a SoCal course?
