Flowers at Sunday’s Farmers Market

Last Sunday on Mother's Day, the market was crowded with families and couples and, as always, shoppers carried tote bags filled with fresh produce.

The freshly washed carrots at Underwood Family Farms looked great, as did John ’s watercress, Mr. ’s asparagus and the artichokes at Corona farms. Crowds gathered around Denise Assad's  and the .

 Because of the holiday, flowers were a popular item as spouses celebrated their wives and kids searched for bouquets for their moms. “Find flowers you think mommy would like,” one dad was overheard saying to his pre-teen son.

Residents made selections from an extensive assortment of flowers in every imaginable color, including the freshly cut roses in tall metal buckets sold by Bernie of Kendall Garden, who always sits on a chair reading his Sunday newspaper. 

For those who preferred their flowers selected and arranged, the florists at  on Sunset,  tucked in the walk-way next to Citi Bank or the local supermarkets were there to help.

Regular visitor to the market, Joe Piscatella had a large bag of vegetables in hand as he carried a bundle of snapdragons and a mixed bouquet on top of the stroller that carried his son.

 As Joe explained, "My wife Jill and I usually buy flowers every time we go to the farmers market. The only time I don't get my flowers there is if a special occasion falls in the middle of the week."

It was a bright sunny day, perfect for a walk around the market with the family. When asked whom the flowers were for, little Joe said, “Mom.”

As summer approaches, keep an eye out at the Sunday market for an ever larger selection of flowers and don’t forget that potted plants are also available, including the amazing orchids Ken sells in front of 1032 Swarthmore, where  is building his new restaurant.
