Candidates for 50th Assembly District to Square Off Sunday

Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, liberal activist Torie Osborn and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom to participate in forum at Malibu City Hall.

Pacific Palisades voters will get an opportunity Sunday to hear from the three Democrats competing to represent the community in the state Assembly.

Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, political veteran Torie Osborn and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, all candidates for the newly created 50th Assembly District, which includes Pacific Palisades, will participate in a forum at Malibu City Hall hosted by the Malibu Democratic Club. West Hollywood resident Brad Torgan, the lone Republican in the race, was not invited to the forum.

This will be the first public forum featuring the three Democrats.

The primary election is June 5. The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will face off in the general election in November. Osborn and Butler are the front-runners in terms of money raised and endorsements collected.

Osborn, a liberal activist, has earned endorsements from Sheila Kuehl (who was the 41st District representative from 1994 to 2000); Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Rep. Karen Bass; Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl; the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund; and the California Nurses Association.

Nonprofit civil rights organization Equality California is endorsing Butler. She has also been endorsed by Assembly Speaker John Pérez, California Democratic Party Vice Chairman Alex Rooker and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca. Organizations backing Butler include the Legislative LGBT Caucus and the Legislative Women’s Caucus.

The club's annual meeting will begin at 11:45 a.m. The forum will start at 12:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Multipurpose Room.

The Palisades Democratic Club will be holding a candidates forum featuring Butler, Osborn and Bloom on Jan. 15 at the Pacific Palisades Women's Club.
